Foreign Agent, by Brad Thor. In a safe house
near the Syrian border, a clandestine
American operations team readies to launch a
dramatic mission months in the making. But
before they can strike, the safe house is
attacked. As the search for answers mounts,
Scot Harvath—half spy, half covert counterterrorism operative—quickly finds himself at
the center of the storm. The edition sold at
Costco includes a short story not currently
available anywhere else. (Item #1072465,

Barkskins, by Annie Proulx. In the late 17th
century, two Frenchmen, René Sel and Charles
Duquet, arrive in New France to work as
woodcutters—barkskins. Proulx follows the
descendants of Sel and Duquet over 300 years.
Their stories include rivals taking revenge,
accidents, pestilence, Indian attacks and cul-
tural annihilation. Over and over again, they
seize what they can of a presumed infinite
resource, leaving the modern-day characters
face to face with possible ecological collapse.
